NEW YORK: It is rightly said by Emma Watson, actress and UN Women Goodwill Ambassador, “We’re never, ever, ever going to be able to fly as high unless we’re both [men and women] in support of each other”
Empowering women is a top priority for the United Nations and the UN Foundation.
Sant Nirankari Mission (SNM) participated in the 60th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW). CSW is an annual event attended by thousands of delegates from around the world to promote Gender Equality and Women Empowerment. Six delegates represented SNM at CSW March 14-24, 2016. SNM is a designated member of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) since 2012 and has been contributing towards humanitarian causes for many years.
As part of CSW60 and to celebrate International Women’s Day, SNM took part in a rally organized by CSW NGO. The children from the Mission presented a song “World Without Walls” in front of thousands of people gathered at the Dag Hammarskjold Plaza to celebrate Gender Equality. Through this song, banners and slogans, the Mission highlighted the message of Oneness and Humanness. Despite being a working day, people showed enthusiasm and participated in the rally traveling long distances to convey the message of Love, Peace and Harmony. The rally was also attended by a diverse group of NGOS including some UN officials.
SNM also hosted a parallel event in partnership with UN Women on March 21st at the Salvation Army Auditorium to discuss Interfaith Role in Women Empowerment. Mr. Ravi Karkara, Senior Advisor, UN Women moderated the event and panelists included Joy Theriot, Director UN Relations, Mahroo Moshari, Executive Director, Manhattan Multicultural Society, Dr. Richard Potter, Meditation Teacher and Author and Shabnam Madhok, SNM UN Delegate.
UN Parallel Event
The event showcased a documentary, “A Mission for All,” to present the exemplary work of SNM for upliftment of the society. The moderator of the Program, Mr. Ravi Karkara continued the program with discussion on Interfaith Role in Women Empowerment. Faith is an original expression of the human heart and it plays an important role in uplifting society. The central message shared by the panel was to strengthen faith by empowering women as they nurture our families. A key remark made by the moderator: “Show me someone, who is not born through the womb of a woman” led the hall into applause.
An invitation was extended to the audience for NIS2 in Toronto. The session ended with concluding remarks and plaque distribution to the invitees for their contribution to Women Empowerment.
